Malignant Mesothelioma: Symptoms

What are the symptoms of malignant mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma seldom causes symptoms in its early stages. This means when it's small and hasn't spread. In fact, this type of cancer often doesn't cause symptoms until it’s advanced. Symptoms depend on where the cancer is.

Pleural mesothelioma (in the chest) can cause:

  • Breathing problems, such as shortness of breath

  • Cough

  • Chest or lower back pain

  • Trouble swallowing

  • Hoarseness

  • Swelling in the face and arms

Peritoneal mesothelioma (in the belly) can cause:

  • Pain in your belly

  • Swelling or fluid buildup in your belly

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Constipation

General mesothelioma symptoms include:

  • Weight loss without trying

  • Extreme tiredness (fatigue)

  • Fever

  • Night sweats

  • Blood clots

When to see your healthcare provider

Many of these symptoms can be caused by other health problems. So it’s important to see a healthcare provider if you have these symptoms. Only a healthcare provider can tell if you have malignant mesothelioma.
